I just watched this moving TED talk by Bryce Evans, founder of the One Project. He talks about what we really need: a revolution in how we think about mental health, the eradication of the stigma associated with it, and allowing people with mental health issues to be seen and heard. His heartfelt talk highlights how people can start to express their stories, without talking about it, which is often hard. Whether it’s done with a therapist or art therapist, or with peers, or on one’s own, finding a voice, which can be creative or visual, can be a great, giant, first step toward healing.
As an art therapist, I’ve found photography to be a powerful tool to express emotions for which, sometimes, words don’t exist. Plus, I really like how accessible photography is, as an artistic medium. I’ve worked with clients using photography who have a variety of challenges, including body image, depression, identity, relationships and aging. And photography has been a part of my own healing process during difficult times.
